Learn about Sustainable Practices, 26 Independent Smallholders Joined Sekolah Lapangan

Palmoilmagazine, PEMATANG RAYA – The independent smallholders in Dusun V Negeri I, Nagori Muara Mulai, Sub district of Tanah Jawa, District of Simalungun, North Sumatera Province did sekolah lapangan that delivered materials about sustainable palm oil plantation practices.

26 independent smallholders joined it that Perkumpulan Pekebun Kelapa Sawit Berkelanjutan Bintang Simalungun (PPKSBBS) led by Edi Sinaga S.Ag., proposed.

Sekolah lapangan was running in a palm oil plantation belonging to Situmorang. It was trained by Anggiat Marpaung and reliable trainers from PT Koompasia Enviro Institute.

Marpaung told, it is important to know good agriculture practice (GAP), kinds of palm oil seeds, the aspects of environment, and others.

Environment aspect, for instance, Marpaung told, the independent smallholders should not apply chemical ingredients (to the environment), the plantations should be planted minimally 20 meters from the river side. He also told how to control pest practically without damaging the environment around palm oil plantation, and how to nurse the trees.

the other thing is that, Marpaung told that the smallholders should understand what child labor means, and everything that relates to human rights.

Marpaung told to Palmoilmagazine, from the beginning, the smallholders should not take their children to work at palm oil plantations.

He emphasized, to get sustainable certificate namely Roundtable on Sustainable palm Oil (RSPO) certificate, the independent smallholders joining in PPKSBBS should be serious so that they would get the outcome. (T5)
